About 5 months ago I underwent a mastectomy, without any plastic sugery, tissue expanders, etc.; and only 4 lymph nodes were removed. Now, since my operation, the "operation site" has started swelling considerably, to the extent that it now appears that I have a very large, and oddly shaped, breast. The doctor who did the operation has aspirated the breast twice, the most recent being 3 weeks ago. The swelling has gotten even worse since that aspiration. The doctor and my oncologist both discourage frequent aspirations, they say it closes the vessels carriying fluid to the breast to close. Nonetheless, I am still concerned about the swelling, its been going on way too long, and wonder whether I should seek a second opinion, because I don't believe that this is normal...anyone have any suggestions or similar situations/stories?

thanksx

I do know that swelling is normal after surgery. I had one friend who had a partial mastectomy, and she grew from a B cup to a DD. It eventually went away. The doctors said that the swelling was caused by a build up of blood and fluid, the doctors did say however that there was a possibility of scarring and that there could be some mild alteration to the breast. But I do think that 5 months is pretty long. Maybe you should get a second opinion.
